Personal goals. Important?
Personal goals. Important?
Personal goals. Plans of how to get from where you are, to an experience you wish to have.
Is it important to have them? Necessary, even?
Yes, goal setting and achievement will mean putting in the required “work”.
So, is it of value, or is it something we can do without?
Imagine driving in your car without having a specific destination in mind.
You will drive aimlessly until you encounter some unknown town that you may or may not enjoy exploring.
One time you’ll be pleasantly surprised, another time perhaps gravely disappointed. It becomes a roll of the dice.
You have no control over what your experience will be. Life is happening “TO you.”
Now imagine knowing where you’re heading. You know your destination and you’re pretty sure you will enjoy it.
Granted, you’ve never been there, but what the destination offers is something you want to experience.
It becomes your choice. You are the one steering the car and purposely driving towards a destination that you feel will bring you joy.
You are in control of where you are heading. Life is happening “BECAUSE OF you.”
It’s the same with goal setting. Life moves forward. The car is driving, regardless of whether you punch a destination into the GPS, or not.
You’re going to end up somewhere. It would be to your own advantage if that somewhere was a “place” you want to experience,
as opposed to a “place” you may or may not appreciate experiencing.
Setting personal goals in line with your desired outcome, empowers you. It gives you a sense of control over your own life.
It allows you to explore the things that you want to. Moreover, goal-setting (and working until they are achieved) gives you the very big
advantage of getting to know what you really like/want. Honesty commands me to say, not all goals will be as enjoyable as you first thought they would be.
Some might even turn out to be a disappointment. But don’t let that trick you into not setting new goals.
Not having the envisioned satisfaction upon reaching a goal, doesn’t mean you failed.
It means you discovered that you don’t enjoy something which you, prior to the experience, imagined you would enjoy.
This knowledge is a very valuable tool, which you can use to set new goals.
Wrapping up, goal setting, and working towards the realization of that goal:
- lets you get to know yourself in a deeper way
- builds confidence
- creates new experiences
- enhances motivation
- teaches you about you and what you want
- creates growth.
